Dolly Field Trip

The Battle of Kings Mountain “Pretty! Pretty! Guess what!” shouted Gemmy. “We’re going to King’s Mountain!”
“Really, Gemmy?”
“Yes, yes!” cried Gemmy.
“Hurray!” the girls were super excited.
“Ohh, Gemmy, let’s do a Junior Ranger Badge, too,” said Pretty.
So Pretty, Gemmy, and Maryellen went to King’s Mountain and started to do their booklets to earn the Junior Ranger badge.
They met a ranger who offered to guide them through the battlefield trail.
She introduced herself as Oliva.
“Don’t we know you?” asked Maryellen.
“Nope,” said Oliva quickly, “you do not”.
Oliva led them through the King’s Mountain trail and talked about the battle that took place there.
“When the patriots won, it was a turning point for the American Revolution. And did you know only one soldier in this battle was actually from England? That means both sides fighting were fought by people born in the colonies. Some even knew the people they were fighting against as relatives or neighbors.”
“Whoa,” the girls thought about that a minute.
“Oh! A cicada! Take my picture,” cried Gemmy.
There was a deafening sound coming from the forest caused by millions of cicadas.
Up on the mountin the girls tried to take a picture at the monument where the battle took place. Unfortunately, the sun was glaring right at them.
The girls finished their Junior Ranger booklets and took an oath to protect National parks and monuments. They said goodbye to Olivia and hoped to see her again soon.
“Yay! We got our pins,” beamed Pretty.
Bursting with excitement, they couldn’t even think about heading home yet.
“Hey, there’s a carousel nearby, I think,” suggested Gemmy.
“Should we try it?”
“Of course,” they all agreed.
“AWWWsome ride! Whoa horsey,” shouted Pretty.
They rode a few times, then headed to the playground.
“I think it's getting hot,” called Maryellen, from the beam.
They gathered under the pavilion and discussed what to do next.
“Well, there's only one thing to do when it gets this hot,” declared Pretty.
They all looked at each other and shouted together “ICECREAM!.”
And so it was the perfect ending to a perfect day.
